Fretting corrosion of tin-plated contacts: Evaluation of surface characteristics
نویسندگان
چکیده
The surface characteristics of the contact zone of tin-plated copper alloy contacts subjected to fretting motion for 8000, 16,800 and 48,000 cycles under unlubricated conditions are presented. The nature of the contact zone, at the verge of wearing out of the tin coating as well as upon the coating is completely worn out, is assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and X-ray dot mapping, and the influence of these changes on the contact resistance is correlated. The study reveals that under unlubricated conditions, fretting caused significant damage at the contact zone. Occurrence of adhesive wear failure is observed at early stages whereas at latter stages, delamination wear is the predominant mode of failure. As the fretting cycle increases, the concentration of copper increases whereas the concentration of tin decreases; oxygen concentration though not appreciable at the early stages, starts to build with increase in fretting cycles, attributing to the increase in contact resistance due to the formation of oxides of copper and tin at the contact zone. r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Fretting corrosion of tin-plated contacts
The susceptibility of tin-plated contacts to fretting corrosion is a major limitation for its use in electrical connectors. The present paper evaluates the influence of a variety of factors, such as, fretting amplitude (track length), frequency, temperature, humidity, normal load and current load on the fretting corrosion behaviour of tin-plated contacts. This paper also addresses the developme...
متن کاملIntermittency Phenomena in Electrical Connectors
Fretting is known to be a major cause of contact deterioration and failure, particularly in tin-plated contacts. During fretting the contact resistance generally increases slowly with time. Superimposed on this slow increase in contact resistance are rapid changes in contact resistance within fractions of a second, called intermittences or short duration discontinuities. Although intermittences...

The automotive environment is particularly demanding on connector performance, and is characterized by large temperature changes, high humidity and corrosive atmospheres. This paper presents an initial study of connector performance in terms of temperature profiles taken from road vehicles. The temperature profiles are then simulated using empirical relationships to allow prediction of connecto...

The corrosion behavior of both tin-plated carbon steel and aluminum (Al 1100) in NaCl solutions were studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The study objectives were to compare their corrosion behavior in concentrated brine solution, establish the equivalent electrical circuit diagrams of their corrosion phenomena, and consequently develop steady-state corrosion models for ...

The medical device industry is still seeking answers to the mechanically-assisted corrosion (MAC) problem, which becomes increasingly important due to modularity in design. MAC manifests in various forms, some of which are fretting corrosion, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion. Several studies have been conducted to understand the causes and the factors that affect fretting corrosion. Some ...
